Personally, I find it so difficult to colour ready to roll icing that I just buy it ready coloured now! I usually get it from Hobbycraft or we have a local cake decorating shop.

I'd definatly agree that it's easier to buy ready coloured. I normally pay about £2 a pack from the cake decorating shop or you can get it on ebay too x

You need to use gel colours.
You can get these from a cake shop or supermarkets do sell a small set of red yellow and blue though they are a lot weaker than the stuff from the cake shops.
Liquid food colourings will make the icing sticky and difficult to work with.

Much easier to use the ready coloured stuff. Buy from e-bay as some sellers do quite small amounts which is useful. Wrap up any left over really well with clingfilm and it keeps for ages (I've had some of my colours for a year and still using them!).
When i need soft icing I use gel colours (also on ebay) with betty crockers buttercream icing.

Hi I'm pretty sure you can just use a brush which you would paint egg on pastry with to paint the green colouring all over the cake once you've laid it ontop. You might find a video on youtube showing you how otherwise. Hth

You need to get proper colour, it is VERY concentrated and generally get a cocktail stick a add a little colour to the sugar paste and then knead it, adding more for a darker shade...
or
Buy ready coloured! lol
If I need a lot of a colour I buy ready made, I only ever colour sugar paste myself if they are small amounts for making figures, flowers etc.

I use gel colourings. If you use liquid food colouring it changes the consistentency of the icing and you can't work with it.
Qvc sell a set of six gel colours for £13 odd an they are a good brand name. The same set costs £20 on amazon. I love qvc lol

You could make it easier on yourself...
A large cake, whatever shape... covered with green sugarpaste... with a grey road and a toy roadsweeper and some other toys on there to decorate and creat a scene... that way he can have a cake of the things he enjoys and gets to keep the decorations afterwards.

I normally colour my own with sugarpaste with sugarflair paste colours. If you are likely to make more cakes in the future it is cheaper as the paste colours last ages. However, if it is your first attempt and you don't know if you will use the colours again, it is probably worth just buying the ready coloured. Deep colours, particularly black are hardest to colour yourself. You might also consider using other items to cut down on the work such as oreo biscuits for wheels.

have a look on the above website for ideas as well. I use this site a lot as they have practically every themed cake you could think of. I usually look at them all and then steal the best ideas for my own cake
Hobbycraft sell ready coloured icing in most colours. If they don't have the colour you want (for example green) you can buy the colours to mix yourself (so blue and yellow in this case). They also sell paste colouring which is excellent for sugarpaste icing. Squires kitchen also do coloured icing.
